Recently I’ve been forced to reevaluate my means of earning an income at the moment. There has been many changes and giant upheavals thrown into our mix this year. From it all, I’ve learned a few things about jobs and money and work while having forms of ADD or ADHD.
So, let me start with this thought: People almost expect a person to go work at one single job for their next forty years. I say can that garbage right now. If you have an attention deficit, which seems to impede your forward financial progress, that is. IT IS NOT FOR EVERYONE>!
Years ago, i was able to leverage two jobs to make a decent living. Most of which went to the local bars and Budweiser brewing companies to be honest. I worked at a fast food chain in the mornings and a factory overnights. Money seemed to be quite abundant. Shoulda saved it though. Didnt.
Then there was some stupid major drama and i was forced to drop a job. Luckily, the other one was enough to pay bills but not much else. Then, pain happened when i lost that job due to my own negligence of not showing up for work too many times. I would have been fine if i had called in, but i didnt. No phone. (Remember, right before cell phones were allowed in use by all the sector of people and not just the truly well to do).
Two months later, i would land a very sweet job as a certified nursing assistant. Because i did well there, i was offered a chance to work at a butcher shop in my then city. I jumped for joy because i needed more…BEER MONEY! It was a tight path for a bit until my body got used to the brutal hours and a half hour nap between but adapt or die, as they say. Two years after that, i would drop full time to part time at the nursing home and was offered a spot doing meds in a city an hour away. I did that four days a week, nursing home two days a week and then the butcher shop five mornings a week.
Then, the wrong mindset jumped back into my life and i’ve struggled a number of years with happiness versus job hours quotient. I tried the back breaking factories, whatever other things i could after the reign of three jobs and just couldnt find balance. I would go to work miserable because they STOLE all my time and energy, so my family suffered. Then i would quit and have plenty of time with family but zero dollars. Then i would find and try a part time situation, which gave just enough to pay bills, provide time with family and a very stressful financial situation. The wife decided that I was most happy when i was “Dating my Jobs”, i.e, working for a temp company on the daily. They would call me up and i would say yes or no per day. Loved it.
The trouble started again when i started chasing the wrong things; money, insurance, vacation, benefits… yadda yadda.
Years later, i would be laid off three times in a row from three seperate companies. Talk about a tailspin! That moment, i resolved to never let myself be that vulnerable again.
So, i did the opposite of normal. I got a paper route motor carrier position. Then months later, i needed money on top of paper delivery so, i started cooking grilled cheese and gyros on a food cart. After a restructuring, i dropped from three days a week there to one. After complete boredom every thursday, that three became one and then finally fizzed out. There would be like seven customers, four dollars in tips and a parking ramp bill for six dollars. In the process, a buddy of mine told me about how he got financially secure delivering pizzas on the weekly. It does work. When Dave Ramsey and others discuss a second job and going to deliver pizzas, they arent kidding. There is good money there for not that difficult of work. But, wanderlust and ADD snared me again. I couldnt commit to working five to six days a week there without getting too involved in the high drama. I’m a type of person that just wants to do my work and be left the hell alone.
Add to this a call the other day saying my wife got a part time job at a hotel, i also received a call from one of the butcher shops i used to work at. They needed someone bad.
So here is a glimpse of my life as it stands. I run the paper route from 2am til around 6 or 630 am. Then my wife works four to five days a week starting at 8 am till 1 or 2 pm. After that, i either head to deliver pizzas at 530 pm til close or i head to the butcher shop. I’m happy but its complicated.
Here is where your part of the story comes in. If you find yourself miserable with your situation, you can change it. I would start with delivering pizzas if you have a good cush benefits job that isnt so bad. The first couple of times, it will wear you out and tire you immensely but if you get past that, its worth it. Its alot like exercise. when one starts a new regiment, they get super tired and not many benefits from it. After they make it a daily, there is a total good feeling buzz where body and mind are reenergized from it. The same applies here. Conditioning.
One shouldnt add too many things at once either however. Get a groove with one, add another and Bam, Pow! Soon your life is a bit more balanced and money is a bit more easily accessible. Then eventually, your three jobs allow you more money for less time than you previously thought possible.
So, if you have ADD or ADHD or attention issues or want more money, this might be a workable long term solution for you. Consult your spouse though and get them on board. I can’t stress enough how vital that is. They need to be in your corner and very accepting of a dip in time to start. That changes though when you’ve put these jobs on autopilot and start to reap goodness from them.
So, for those who dont fit normal. THose who dont fit the mold or can’t make money. There is options. Not rushed into though. Take your time, add jobs as needed. Enlist your family.
Treat your employers like having your own business. Whereas, if you have four customers, it is more stable if you lose one than if you have one customer. If you lose one, you will still be alright if you have four. IF you have one, its shaky ground. There might be some unemployment alpo or some bills overdue and shut off notices. There might be foreclosures or other pains unforeseen.
So, you can keep on your path, but i choose different. I choose to have many customers. I choose to trade my work for money, not my hours. I hate the whole hourly system. There is only so many hours and one cant make more. As of this moment, i still deliver pizzas which is paid hourly plus tips. If i could get just tips, i would love it even more. Then my time is neutralized and my efforts are magnified.
Let the hate mail commence in 3,2,1…
